Tyrys Thomas is NOT a bust

NBAE/Getty Images

I noticed that a popular opinion on Bulls Weekly right now is that Tyrus Thomas is a bust. Yes, his field goal percentage is down, and there have been questions about his work ethic and attitude. However, his averages in scoring, rebounding and assists are all up, and he still shows flashes of excellence and his explosiveness is undeniable. I know I sound like a broken record, but he is only 21 years old. When he was drafted, everyone pretty much said he was about three years away from contributing seriously. Now he's not even had two full years in the league and he's already being labeled a bust. He's still learning a lot and if he can ever secure a decent midrange J and some handles, I can see him becoming a superstar in the NBA. However, if we're having this discussion again at the end of his third year, I'll agree that he is a bust, and the Bulls should part ways with him. But until then, please have some patience, and don't take out your aggression on a horribly disappointing and borderline disastrous season on one of your best prospects for the future. Wait it out.

Tyrus shouldnt be labeled a bust. While I dont know what exactly is going on, I have a few theories

Tyrus was starting after the Wallace trade, and he did well with his playing time, then Boylan decides to start Gooden over Tyrus. Tyrus thinks this is BS and has a few problems with it...So he becomes a little unmotivated, which is understandable. And with the erratic minutes he gets, I dont see how he can do anything right. Its the same type of play we saw from Tyson Chandler in 2005-2006 when Skiles wasted him and Boylan is now wasting Tyrus.

Another theory is simply just that Tyrus doesnt have a work ethic and because of that he himself will be a waste of talent.
